| Center for Women and
Children In today's world, it's an unfortunate
fact that domestic abuse causes the destruction of the family.
Through several of our raffles, events, and fundraisers, we've
been able to help countless families throughout the area by
donating money, time, and clothes. We're also planning a paint
trip to make the place a little more comfortable. |
| Save
the Manatee The
Derby Parrot Heads are the proud parents of Margarito, an West
Indies Manatee who now resides in the Gulf Coastal waters of
Florida. |
| The
Dream Factory
OK, so maybe we have a soft spot for kids. This organization
helps make the dreams of terminally-ill children come true. |
| The
Food Closet A
subsidiary of Dare to Care, the Food Closet offers help to the
less-fortunate with groceries through church and community contributions.
Each year the Derby Parrot Heads have donated over 5,000 pounds
of groceries. |
| Alzheimers
Association of Louisville Each year,
the Derby Parrot Heads take part in the Memory Walk to benefit
the Alzheimers Association of Louisville. Our club has
averaged over $1,500 each year, and thanks to member Paula Burke,
were the only group that were actually able to incorporate
Hot Damn and Corona into the mile walkathon. |
| K-9
Companions We
recently held a raffle and gave away a limited edition Parrot
Head sculpture. The $300 raffle proceeds are being donated to
K-9 Companions here in Louisville. This group helps to train
companion dogs for special-needs children here in Louisville.
|
| Habitat
for Humanity Proving that were
not afraid of a little hard work, we meet twice a year with
our power tools and paintbrushes in hand to aid the Louisville
Habitat for Humanity. Unfortunately, one of our houses was burned
down by drug dealers shortly after we left. Oh well
it
was still worth the time and we had a great time. |
| Beargrass
Creek Cleanup
Several members donned hip waders and old clothes to help clean
up trash along the Beargrass Creek, an important tributary to
the Ohio River. |
| Louisville
Zoo's Halloween Party
Thousands of man hours were provided by members to the Zoo to
help give out candy and organize their annual party, dubbed
the world's largest Halloween party. It's a way for kids to
collect candy in a safe environment. |
| Angel
Tree Over 500
man-hours were provided by the club to the Salvation Army's
Angel Tree program. This program helps provide Christmas gifts
to needy children. The parrot heads manned local booths at area
malls. |
| Wayside
Christian Mission
Over 180 winter coats and sweaters were collected to help clothe
the homeless in the Louisville area. We've also donated over
1000 pounds of food items to the mission. |
| Bosnian
Children Members
of the club helped collect warm clothes for the children in
Bosnia, where war and uncertainty are destroying their childhood.
|
| Adopt-A-Family
The parrot heads donated money
to a needy family for them to buy Christmas gifts. |
| Zooparents
speaking of adoption, we've adopted
a macaw, a cockatoo, and an iguana at the Louisville Zoo. |
| St.
Vincent's Orphanage
Hurricane Hugo nearly devastated the St. Vincent's Orphanage
on the island of St. Barts. Our club, along with other parrot
heads on our Windjammer cruise donated over $2,000 to help rebuild
it. |
| Joshua
Grider Fund Joshua
was a young child in our area who had inoperable cancer. His
only wish was to swim with a dolphin. We were able to help that
dream come true with the generosity of our members. |
| Road
Cleanup If youre
driving down Taylorsville Road on early some Saturday morning,
you might just see several members of the Derby Parrot Heads
walking up and down the road, picking up trash and various body
parts from road kill! |
| Child
Assault Program
One of our favorite charities over the past few years has been
the Child Assault Program. This organization, which is an unfortunate
necessity, educates children in how to deal with the threat
of sexual predators. |
| Reef
Relief The Florida
Keys have the only live reef in the continental United States.
To help make sure these wonderful examples of sea life are available
for viewing for generations to come, the Parrot Heads helped
out with a beach cleanup and donated money to the folks at Reef
Relief. |
